Tight competition at the 2023 BWF World Tour Finals continues. The six Indonesian representatives are ready to show their best abilities and achieve victory against the world’s top badminton players, Thursday (12/14/2023).
In the first match, Indonesia’s best representatives showed mixed results. Some achieved glorious victories, while others faced tough challenges.
The first Indonesian representative to compete was Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from the women’s singles event. Jorji had to admit the superiority of his opponent from Taipei, Tai Tzu Ying, through a two-game match with a score of 21-18 and 21-17. This record makes Jorji have a tough task to win against An Se-young and Kim Ga-eun if he wants to keep alive his hopes of reaching the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the men’s doubles representatives, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, achieved their first victory by winning in straight games 21-14 and 21-19 over their compatriots, Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri. These results brought Fajar/Rian to the top of the group B standings. In the next match, Fajar/Rian will face Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen from Denmark, and Bagas/Fikri will face Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae from Korea.
Likewise, the Indonesian women’s doubles representatives, Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, successfully achieved victory after defeating Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara from Japan with a score of 11-21, 21-16 and 21-18. Apart from facing Mayu/Wakana, Apri/Fadia, who are members of Group A, will face Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan and Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning.
Indonesian men’s singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting showed a spectacular game to beat the first seed in this tournament, namely Kodai Naraoka from Japan. Having fallen behind, Ginting won with a score of 10-21, 21-10 and 21-18. This result is good capital for Ginting to get through the Group A competition by facing Shi Yu Qi from China and Viktor Axelsen from Denmark.
Finally, closing the first match well, Jonatan Christie managed to follow in Ginting’s footsteps by winning over world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand with a score of 21-18 and 21-8. Winning two straight games over Kunlavut, Jojo shot to the top of the temporary Group B standings. This result is capital for Jojo to get through the Group B competition. Apart from Vitidsarn, he also has to face Li Shi Feng from China and Anders Antonsen from Denmark. So, how far have Indonesia’s best representatives gone in this year’s World Tour Finals?
