HANGZHOU – The Indonesian women’s doubles pair, Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, successfully made a brilliant comeback against the Japanese duo, Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara. In the first match in Group A of the 2023 BWF World Tour Finals (WTF), Apriyani/Fadia won with a score of 11-21, 21-16 and 21-18.
Apriyani/Fadia revealed that playing patiently was the main factor in their success in defeating the pair ranked 8th in the world.
Competing at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, Hangzhou, China, Wednesday (13/12/2023) afternoon WIB, Apriyani/Fadia performed poorly at the start of the game. However, they were able to play much better in the next two games.
“Thank God we were able to win the match and were in good health. We were trying to get one point at a time first, we weren’t thinking about winning or losing but how to show our best,” said Apriyani as quoted in a PBSI release, Wednesday (13/12/ 2023).
The pair known as Prifad also revealed that their crushing defeat in the first game occurred because they had not found the right playing pattern to fight Matsumoto/Nagahara. Apart from that, they also played in a hurry.
“In the first game we weren’t really sure how we would play, but in the second game we started to find the right pattern. We also had to play patiently,” said Fadia.
“We were in a hurry in the last points, our thinking was not about getting points but how to kill them. So we wasted a lot of opportunities,” he continued.
The 2023 Hong Kong Open champions also revealed that they were successful in making a comeback because they were able to play more patiently during the long rallies that occurred. Apart from that, they considered that the Sakura Country duo performed under pressure so they often made their own mistakes.
“I saw that my opponents were probably under pressure too, they certainly wanted to win but they were losing points themselves. That’s what we took the opportunity to do, especially in the second game and then continued in the third game,” said Apriyani.
