LONDON – Liverpool successfully overtook Arsenal at the top of the 2023/2024 Premier League standings. This positive result was created after a dramatic 2-1 win against 10 Crystal Palace players at Selhurst Park Stadium, Saturday (9/12/2023).
Liverpool actually appeared dominant in this match. They were able to control ball possession by 75 percent compared to 25 percent.
Not just possession of the ball. Liverpool also managed to damage the opponent’s defensive wall by releasing 12 kicks. However, Juergen Klopp’s troops seemed to have difficulty hitting Palace’s goal.
Instead of wanting to open up the lead, Liverpool conceded first through a goal scored by Jean-Philippe Mateta (57′).
Liverpool tried to respond to the goal. This opportunity opened when Palace played with 10 players after Jordan Ayew was sent off by the referee in the 75th minute.
One minute later, Mohamed Salah managed to score a goal. Mo Salah has scored his 200th goal for Liverpool in all competitions, becoming the fifth player in the club’s history to achieve the milestone.
The score changed to 1-1 and disaster for Palace finally came in injury time. It was Harvey Elliott who successfully got his name on the scoreboard while reversing Liverpool’s 2-1 lead.
Until the final whistle sounded, the score 2-1 for Liverpool’s victory had not changed. An additional three points are enough to overtake Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings.
