GUWAHATI – Indonesian men’s singles badminton athlete, Alwi Farhan, was hit by a comeback from Malaysia’s representative, Justin Hoh in the quarter-finals of the Guwahati Masters 2023. Having led 21-17 in the first game, Alwi finally lost 20-22 and 17-21 in the next two games.
Alwi’s defeat meant that Indonesia failed to get an automatic ticket to the final of the Super 100 badminton tournament. In fact, he was waiting for his compatriot, Alvi Wijaya Chairullah, who had already qualified for the semifinals.
Appearing at the Saru Sajai Indoor Sports Complex, Guwahati, India, Friday (12/8/2023) afternoon WIB, Alwi immediately faced fierce resistance from Hoh at the start of the game. They traded attacks at a fast pace until the score reached 5-5.
The score-chasing action continued until it reached 8-8, where they took turns taking the lead. After that, Alwi was able to play more effectively and walked away with an 11-8 advantage in the first game interval.
After taking a break, the 18 year old athlete continued to pressure his opponent with a variety of hard smash attacks and cool drop shots. As a result, he was able to widen his lead to 15-11.
However, when entering the critical points, Justin was able to get up and fight back and cut his deficit to 16-17. Luckily Alwi was able to find his best touch again to close the first game with a 21-17 win.
The two players were again involved in chasing numbers in the second game. Alwi, who always took the lead, was able to continue to be chased by Hoh until he reached a score of 6-6.
After that, the Red and White representative was leading 8-6, but Hoh was able to recover and turn things around to 9-8. However, Alwi was able to take the lead again at 13-11.
The fierce battle continued, where Hoh was again able to escape the pressure by minimizing his mistakes and regained the lead at 16-13. However, Alwi quickly recovered to equalize the score at 16-16 and then lead 20-19. Unfortunately, he was careless so Hoh got three points in a row to win the second game with a score of 22-20.
