JAKARTA – The wave of Russian drone attacks on Ukraine is becoming more massive, attacking as far as Kyiv. Not all attacks are successful, but they are enough to cause problems for the opponent and suffer big losses.
It is estimated that the wave of Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian territory will be even more massive. Ukraine’s military predicts the Kremlin will repeat its campaign of devastating missile and drone attacks.
In late November 2023, Russia launched a wave of Shahed drone attacks on Ukrainian territory. At least 75 drones were launched into Ukraine from two locations in Russia. Russian drones attacked at least six regions, including Kyiv.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Colonel Yuriy Ignat said in early October Kyiv was preparing for larger drone strikes than in previous years, noting 500 Shahed drones launched by Russia in September 2023 alone.
In fact, as quoted from Sputnik, Wednesday (6/12/2023), Russian drone manufacturers have designed a number of cheap and efficient drone models that have proven to be an advantage for Russian troops against Ukraine.
The Oko design bureau in Russia recently unveiled the latest version of the Privet-82 kamikaze drone which is currently in active use by Russian forces.
The new model, Privet-82M1, features an improved control system that allows the drone operator to guide the drone from cover, thereby reducing the possibility of falling victim to enemy counterattacks.
1. Drone Russia Privet-82
The Privet-82 (meaning Halo-82) is essentially a fixed-wing kamikaze drone that can reach speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour (and up to 160 kilometers per hour when diving towards a target) and has a range of up to 30 kilometers.
The drone can carry up to 5.5 kilograms of payload, the equivalent of one 82mm mortar round, allowing it to be used to destroy enemy armored vehicles, artillery and fortifications. The Privet-82 drone is relatively cheap, with one drone costing USD 1,200 or around IDR 18.5 million.
2. Drone Privet-120
However, the Privet-82 is not the only drone model developed by Oko. For example, the design bureau recently announced the creation of a heavier kamikaze drone called the Privet-120 with a range of 250 kilometers. This drone can reach speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour and can carry up to 16 kilograms of payload.
This enhanced capability (compared to the Privet-82) allows the Privet-120 to be used to destroy various elements of enemy infrastructure. Such as power relay stations, fuel filling stations, and military posts. The creator of this drone calls the Privet-120 a super cheap cruise missile.
3. Drone Privet-Mini
Russian engineers at Oko also created a surveillance drone called the Privet-Mini specifically designed for short-range recognition missions. Although the Privet-Mini cannot stay in the air for long and is primarily intended to be sent to a designated area, conduct a review, and return to base, it is very cheap, easy to use, and quite resistant to enemy electronic defenses.
