JAKARTA – It is believed that David Benavidez will destroy Jermall Charlo, the WBC middleweight champion, according to Jose Benavidez senior. Jose Benavidez senior’s confidence was expressed after seeing Jermall Charlo’s performance when he beat Jose Benavidez Jr.
Last Saturday night, at the Michelob Ultra Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) faced Jose Benavidez Jr. On paper, this fight is like an audition. The boxing world and its boxing contemporaries took out pen and paper and started judging him.
In a very one-sided 10 round fight, Jermall Charlo looked smooth. He pushed back Benavidez Jr. the smaller one and lands a punch whenever he wants.
Although some people predicted he would appear less agile, the 33-year-old boxer revealed that he was very happy with his performance. Now, Charlo is sorting through his options.
His first priority, of course, is to get a win over Saul Canelo Alvarez. However, if this is not possible, David Benavidez is a strong candidate. The 26-year-old boxer just grabbed Demetrius Andrade by the throat and knocked him off the top of the super middleweight division.
Jose Benavidez Sr., father of both fighters, saw Charlo up close. The proud father and coach praised Charlo for beating one of his protégés. However, in any form, the father is not convinced that Charlo is ready to compete against his younger son.
“If he looks like that, David will destroy him,” Sr. told BoxingScene.com in a recent interview. “David will tear him to shreds.”
Jermall Charlo is enjoying his time at the top. Big paychecks, world titles and adoring fans, everything is going according to plan. However, when the ship of life is sailing smoothly, that’s often when things start to go downhill.
Out of nowhere, Charlo was forced to take a sabbatical for two and a half years. His injuries affected him greatly, but more importantly, his personal issues outside the ring were something he had to overcome.
Most of his affairs were handled behind closed doors, but Charlo apparently felt that his personal life was back on track and decided to return.
