JAKARTA – The Geminid meteor shower will hit Earth in early December until near the end of 2023. It is estimated that in the peak phase, namely December 14, as many as 120 meteors will launch every hour.
According to NASA, this celestial phenomenon will be an interesting spectacle. The Geminid meteor shower can be witnessed with the naked eye because the December new moon is scheduled to occur just two days before the peak of the meteor shower. This means that moonlight will not dampen the appearance of most meteors.
Reporting from 5Chicago, Friday (1/12/2023), the Geminid meteor shower is one of the most abundant in a year. This meteor comes from the star Castor, which is located in the constellation Gemini, so it is named Geminid.
What makes this meteor shower special is that most of it comes from the trails of comets that have passed through the solar system, but the Geminids come from the trail of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, which was discovered in the 1980s.
To be able to watch the Geminid meteor shower, you should find a dark place, then let your eyes adjust for at least 30 minutes. The radiation point for the meteor shower will be at its highest point in the sky at around 2 am. Although the radiation point will be overhead, meteors can be seen throughout the sky.
