Undefeated boxer Gary Antuanne Russell believes he can sweep all the championship belts in the super lightweight class. Gary Antuanne Russell isn’t just a highly rated super lightweight contender who enjoys seeing his opponents walk out of the ring on a stretcher.
He was a deep thinker, someone who always praised himself. Currently, his thoughts and dreams still have not come true. Collecting wins is important, but putting some world titles under his belt is the main goal. Nowadays, however, collecting those trinkets will require patience.
With all four titles spread across the globe and in the hands of different fighters, Gary Antuanne Russell (17-0, 17 KOs) is ready to hit the road. It may be a tough job, but to be a real man, Russell knows it has to be done. “I want to clean up my division,” Russell told MillCity Boxing.
Teofimo Lopez, Rolando “Rolly” Romero, Regis Prograis, and Subriel Matias are four champions Russell will ultimately have to surpass…at all costs. However, just because he wanted to defeat them, didn’t mean his wish would be granted.
Lopez, who holds the WBO title, seems only interested in big fights against familiar names. Meanwhile, Romero is dealing with an injury that will keep him out until early 2024. Prograis, the division’s WBC champion, will face Devin Haney on December 9.
As for Matias, he will make his return tonight against Shohjahon Ergashev. Matias has a unique style. He is not a pure boxer, and also does not like slow tempos. The IBF belt holder simply buries his face into his opponent’s chest, pushes them back, and punches until they cough up blood.
The 31-year-old may be considered a hard hitter, but Russell isn’t worried about what he brings to the ring. The only thing that matters to him is becoming a world champion. And, whether Matias knew it or not, Russell was after him. “You’re just another person getting in the way.”
