Jermall Charlo’s weight is 1.3 kilograms overweight before entering the ring against Jose Benavidez Jr. this weekend. Jermall Charlo seems to be taking his super middleweight debut very seriously.
The WBC middleweight world champion weighed in Friday morning at 75.4 kilograms, 3.4 kilograms more than his contracted weight of 73.9 kilograms, for his 10-round non-title fight against Jose Benavidez Jr. on Saturday night. Benavidez officially weighed 73.1 kilograms, well below the weight limit set for their pay-per-view match.
When Charlo returned to the Nevada State Athletic Commission scales for his second try at the weigh-in, he was heavier, 75.5 pounds, than on his first try. While Benavidez weighs 1.2 kilograms above the maximum weight for middleweight, which is 72.5 kilograms, Charlo only weighs 1.6 kilograms below the super middleweight weight limit, which is 76.2 kilograms.
The official weigh-in for all Saturday night cards was held behind closed doors Friday morning. Journalists were not allowed to watch the fighters weigh in.
A ceremonial weigh-in, where fighters will still step on the scales five hours after the official weigh-in, is scheduled for 3 p.m. local time at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. This event is open to the public.
Representatives for Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs), who was due to end his 29-month layoff, and Benavidez (28-2-1, 19 KOs) were negotiating at press time for Charlo to pay Benavidez a financial penalty for his resignation.

Benavidez, 31, has agreed to fight at the highest weight of his career, 163 pounds, for a chance to fight Charlo on the undercard of his younger brother, David Benavidez, who will defend his WBC interim super middleweight world title against Demetrius Andrade in the main event 12 rounds at Michelob ULTRA Arena, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
The weight should be a career high for 33-year-old Charlo. Assuming they continue their fight, Charlo will be fighting for the first time since his uninspiring 12-round unanimous decision win over Mexican challenger Juan Macias Montiel (23-6-2, 23 KOs) in June 2021 , at the Toyota Center, Houston.
Jose Benavidez Jr., who once held the WBA 63.5 kg middleweight title, has only fought twice at middleweight and was at a disadvantage against Jermall Charlo. Houston native Charlo has been a middleweight for nearly seven years, since he relinquished the IBF junior middleweight title in early 2017.
