JAKARTA – Nyala is an antelope animal originating from Africa. Nyala or whose scientific name is Tragelaphus angasii is an animal that is famous for having extreme sexual dimorphism or gender differences.
Nyala are herbivorous animals that inhabit the coastal plains and large river valleys of eastern Africa. Nyala consumes a lot of plants, seeds, and fruit.
Nyala is one of the largest antelopes in Africa, weighing around 100 to 140 kilograms with a length of around 110 cm.
Flame weight depends on gender. Male Nyalas weigh twice as much as females, which can only reach 60 kilograms.
The following are other facts about flames quoted from various sources.
1. Non-Territorial Animals
Female flames are animals that live in groups consisting of five or six flames. Unlike females, male flames live non-territorially.
Generally, flames will live in places with lots of water. They will move to another place if the water in the original place they live runs out.
2. Has long and strong horns
The male Nyala has long and strong horns. The horns can reach a length of 85 to 120 cm. The horns are also very strong, so they are often used to fight fellow flames to determine dominance and hierarchy within the group.
3. Sexual Dimorphism Animals
Sexual dimorphism is a physical difference between male and female individuals in one species. In flames, male and female flames in one species have different characteristics.
Male Nyalas tend to be grayish brown in color with a mane that grows from the top of the head to the back and from the neck to the stomach. Male Nyalas also have bright yellow lower legs and yellow spiral horn tips. Meanwhile, female flames are reddish brown and do not have horns or a mane. However, the white vertical stripes on their backs tend to be more numerous than in males.
4. Vigilant Animals
Nyala is one of the most alert antelopes. Nyala has extraordinary hearing, smell and sight. They will always be alert and look after each other. Nyala will give a distinctive warning if it senses danger to its flock.
Nyala has a high-pitched, sharp voice. In fact, the sound is almost similar to a dog barking.
5. Endangered Animals
The nyala has been on the IUCN red list of endangered species since 2016. The threat to the nyala is loss of habitat and illegal hunting is their main threat. Illegal hunting by humans is usually done to take their horns.
