JAKARTA – Indonesian football observer, Akmal Marhali, responded to the chaos that occurred in the Gresik United versus Deltras Sidoarjo match in the 2023/2024 League 2 continuation. According to him, the punishment from the PSSI Komdis alone was not enough, and he asked that there be a criminal law applied to this incident.
The chaos occurred after Gresik United lost 1-2 when they hosted Deltras Sidoarjo at the Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium, Gresik, Sunday (19/11/2023). The chaos is thought to have started with Gresik United supporters protesting against the management over the minor results obtained by their favorite team.
Moreover, the team nicknamed Laskar Joko Samudro lost to Deltras Sidoarjo, which could be said to be one of the East Java derby matches. However, the protests carried out by Gresik United supporters began to get out of control. The situation became increasingly out of control when the security forces on duty actually fired tear gas.
This incident seems to remind us of the Kanjuruhan tragedy which claimed hundreds of lives. It is known that the riot that occurred at the Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium resulted in injuries to both supporters and security forces.
Responding to this, Akmal said that there must be criminal sanctions imposed on the perpetrators of the riot. According to him, there is an article in the Criminal Code (KUHP) that has been violated, namely article 170. In this article it is explained that there is a maximum penalty of 5 years and 6 months in prison.
“The punishment from Komdis alone is not enough. It has been proven that it continues to be repeated because the sanctions are money-oriented. Therefore criminal law enforcement must be enforced,” said Akmal when contacted, Monday (20/11/2023).
“Committing vandalism in the Criminal Code is regulated in Article 170 of the Criminal Code: a maximum penalty of 5 years and 6 months in prison. It is time for the Sports Law Number 11 of 2022 to be implemented,” he continued.
Furthermore, Akmal reminded all Indonesian supporters not to carry out acts of anarchy or vandalism. Moreover, all these actions are prohibited by law and the Criminal Code.
“Positive law enforcement is very important so that a number of acts of anarchy and vandalism do not continue to recur,” he said.
“For the supporters, let’s raise awareness together that anarchism and vandalism are acts that are prohibited under the law and the Criminal Code. Don’t let football be stopped again because of our actions that went too far,” he said again.
It is truly a shame that chaos has once again enveloped Indonesian football. Ironically, this riot occurred while the 2023 U-17 World Cup was being held in Indonesia. It is not impossible for FIFA to have known about this incident, considering that they have also opened an office in Jakarta.
