JAKARTA – Muhammad Shohibul Fikri has many stories about when he was offered a duet with Bagas Maulana. The badminton player who was born in Bandung, West Java, November 16 1999, admitted that he felt inferior when he partnered with his seniors in 2018.
Fikri, who at that time was still an apprentice in 2018 and had just graduated from junior in 2017, immediately received the challenge of a duet with Bagas, who was a year older than him. Plus, the two of them didn’t know each other at that time.
“When I first started being partnered, I was asked whether I wanted to be with Bagas or not. Yes, I said I would like to, who wouldn’t want to be partnered with someone who was already at the National Training Center like that. Only I said back, Bagas himself didn’t want to be with me. The coach said, yes, Bagas “I also want to say,” said Fikri in an exclusive interview with MNC Portal Indonesia at the PBSI Cipayung National Training Center.
“Yes, at first I was still hesitant, like I was confused, right? I didn’t know Bagas that well. Yes, I just knew, but I didn’t know him. At that time we had to be able to adapt. I was younger, he was more senior, right? “So I give in more. But fortunately, he’s kind too, I don’t always give in, he understands too, he can give in,” said Fikri.
Even so, it didn’t take long for Fikri to adapt to Bagas. Even though in the end Bagas was not a close friend on the field, the 23 year old player was still able to get along on the field with his senior.
“What I feel is that it’s not that difficult to build chemistry, it doesn’t take that long. We’ve been practicing together all the time, so when we match, we can get along well. Even outside the field, we’re not really close, we’re just friends who aren’t that far away either. , but it can still fit,” explained Fikri.
As a result, Bagas/Fikri has made a series of achievements. Starting from Hyderabad Open 2019 (Super 100), Finland Open 2019 (International Series), All England 2022.
“That’s also us and people didn’t think we could win the All England. Even though I also played like normal, just keep my enthusiasm, just give it my best. But maybe it’s called luck, in the end we can win,” explained Fikri.
