Have you ever experienced bruising for no apparent reason? It may be a sign of disease. Here are the causes of bruising without cause and how to deal with them.
Bruising occurs when blood becomes trapped under the skin, usually as a result of a crush injury that damages small blood vessels. But not all bruises have a simple explanation.
Even though bruising occurs suddenly it doesn’t necessarily mean a person is suffering from a medical condition. Bruising is a condition where the capillaries under the skin break and cause blood to seep into the surrounding tissue.

Bruises are usually blue, purple, or red, and usually go away on their own within a few days. In most cases, bruises are caused by injury, such as a fall, bump, or blow. But in some cases, bruises can appear for no apparent reason.
The following are causes of unexplained bruising which could be an indication of disease or due to other factors.
Causes of unexplained bruising
1. Blood disorders
Quoting from Medical News Today, the cause of unexplained bruising could be blood disorders, such as hemophilia and Von Willebrand’s disease. Hemophilia is a genetic condition in which a person lacks clotting factors VIII or IX, causing excessive bruising.
This is a rare condition that mostly affects men. People with immune thrombocytopenia have a low platelet count and bruising may also appear for no reason.
Platelets are cells that help blood clot and stop bleeding. Factor V deficiency is a rare bleeding disorder in which people lack the protein coagulation factor V. This prevents blood from clotting.
Symptoms can occur at any age. However, most severe cases tend to occur in childhood.
2. Lack of vitamins and minerals
Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin K, and iron, can cause blood vessels to become brittle. As a result, blood vessels break more easily and cause bruising for no apparent reason.
3. Diabetes
Diabetes can cause damage to blood vessels and nerves. This damage makes blood vessels brittle and nerves less sensitive. This then makes mothers more susceptible to bruising even without injury.
4. Use of certain drugs
Some drugs, such as anticoagulants and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can interfere with the blood clotting process. Medicines can inhibit the blood clotting process and inhibit platelet function.
5. Diseases of liver and kidney organs
Liver and kidney disease can disrupt the body’s function in producing blood and eliminating toxins. Mothers with liver and kidney disease are more susceptible to bruising.
When the liver is damaged, it stops producing the proteins needed for blood clotting. For example, cirrhosis is the result of continuous long-term damage and the symptom is easy bruising.
However, this disease does not appear in isolation and may be accompanied by fatigue, loss of appetite, stomach ache and nausea. People with kidney disease also bruise easily due to loss of skin elasticity.
Anyone who suspects liver or kidney disease should consult a doctor.
6. Blood cancer
Easy bruising and bleeding are common symptoms of leukemia. Generally attacks the back, legs and hands.
Another indication of possible leukemia is a large number of bruises of unknown cause. Bruising that takes longer than usual to go away is another concern.
Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and therapy can also cause bruising. This is because they reduce the number of platelets in the blood.
How to deal with bruises for no reason
How to treat unexplained bruising depends on the cause. If the bruise is caused by an illness, the treatment given will focus on treating the illness.
Here are several ways you can treat unexplained bruising before going to the doctor:
Apply a cold compress to the bruised area for 20-30 minutes, several times a day. Elevate the bruised area above heart level to reduce swelling. Use topical medication to reduce pain and swelling. Eat foods rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and iron to help bruises heal.
Tips to prevent bruising for no reason
The following are some tips to prevent bruising:
Avoid collision or injury. Eat healthy and nutritious foods to maintain healthy blood vessels. Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation. Avoid using certain medications without a doctor’s prescription. Control chronic diseases regularly.
If bruising for no reason does not heal or gets worse, you should immediately consult a doctor.
