Menpora Dito Explains How to Overcome Climate Change Through Sports at the 2023 TAFISA Congress
DUSSELDORF – Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ariotedjo was a speaker at the 2023 TAFISA World Congress in Dusseldorf, Germany, Saturday (4/11/2023). On that occasion, he talked about overcoming climate change through sport.
Menpora Dito said, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has a program called Pepelingasih (Youth Cares about a Beautiful and Clean Environment). This program is an embodiment of how sport can be a tool to overcome climate change.
“At the Ministry of Youth and Sports, there is the Pepelingasih (Youth Cares for a Beautiful and Clean Environment) program. This is a youth-driven program to accommodate and encourage the young generation in Indonesia to support the challenges of mitigating the climate crisis,” said Menpora Dito.
Menpora Dito also said that sport has become an inseparable part of Indonesian society. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has also collaborated with the Indonesian Community Sports Committee (KORMI) in the context of sports development.
Several sports programs such as the 2023 Indonesian Community Recreational Sports Festival (FORNAS), TAFISA World Walking Day (WWD), Inter-Village Championship (Tarkam), padel, and the 2023 New York Grand Fondo were successfully implemented. This is a form of sports development carried out by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“In this case, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia is collaborating with the Indonesian Community Sports Committee (KORMI) to develop sports for all in Indonesia,” said Minister of Youth and Sports Dito.
Regarding sport as a tool for climate change, Menpora Dito explained that community-based strategies are important. The existence of a community will encourage higher youth participation in the policy-making process regarding climate through sports.
“Collaboration with the community is very important and encourages higher youth participation in working together in the process of making policies to mitigate the climate crisis in the future,” explained Minister of Youth and Sports Dito
“Then, the creation of policies related to climate change that are more impactful because they are based on the aspirations of local communities who directly experience the crisis,” he added.
The 2023 TAFISA Congress in Dusseldorf takes place from 1 to 5 November 2023, with the theme ‘For a Better World Through Sport for All’. Indonesia is already active in TAFISA and hosted the TAFISA Games in 2016.
