PARIS – Facebook and Instagram users criticized the launch of paid services not to display advertisements from the two platforms. Although Meta, the parent company of the two social media sites, said it was launching the subscription option to comply with European Union (EU) regulations.
Facebook and Instagram users in Europe are threatening to delete their accounts if they have to pay 10 Euros (Rp. 169,000) per month. They consider the costs of subscribing to social media Facebook and Instagram to be too excessive.
“Who will pay 10 Euros a month just to use a social media platform, let alone Facebook,” wrote a Facebook user via the X account (formerly Twitter) quoted by SINDOnews from the Daily Mail page, Wednesday (1/11/2023).
A monthly subscription plan will cost 9.99 Euros (8.72 Pounds Sterling) for web users, while iOS and Android users will have to shell out 12.99 Euros (11.35 Pounds Sterling) per month.
There will be an additional fee of 6 Euros (5.24 Pounds Sterling) for each additional linked account. This subscription package is carried out by Meta because it has to take into account the commission charged by the Apple and Google application stores.
“Who will pay for it?” one social media user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), while another simply said “Goodbye”.
According to Meta, there are currently 258 million monthly Facebook users in the EU, while 257 million users use Instagram every month. This change will force millions of users to decide whether they pay a subscription fee for an ad-free service or see personalized ads.
This paid service for Facebook and Instagram users is similar to Elon Musk’s decision when he introduced a subscription service on X (Twitter). The service was originally called Twitter Blue but has now been renamed X Premium.
“This Mark Zuckerberg is a copycat. Just copy Elon’s moves. Please be a little creative,” said one European netizen on the X account.
