Construction of a gas pipeline that has sparked controversy in western Canada has been completed, the project developer, TC Energy, said Monday (30/10).
The pipeline network has been under construction for years, with protests interspersed with work that has hampered it.
The Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline will transport natural gas from the eastern Canadian province of British Columbia to be liquefied at facilities on the Pacific coast, before export. But the project has long caused contention in Canada.
TC Energy, based in Calgary, Alberta, said it was on track to reach its year-end target. Completion of the pipeline construction came after demonstrations in 2020 over unresolved land claims and environmental issues complained by Canada’s indigenous population.
The pipeline project is a joint venture between oil and gas giant Shell and Petronas Group from Malaysia, PetroChina from China, Mitsubishi from Japan and Korea Gas Corp from South Korea. (ka/rs)
