JAKARTA – Diamonds are always synonymous with sparkling white appearance at special moments because they symbolize purity. It turns out that there are diamonds that are also increasingly sought after by collectors, namely the rare black diamonds.
Beyond the fact that they exist, there is so much magic in the history of black diamonds, from the struggle to obtain them to their popularity in the world of jewelry. There is also a belief in its origins from outer space. Because it is one of the rarest diamonds in the world.
Reporting from The Insider, Thursday (19/10/2023), black diamonds were first discovered by miners on the Chapada plateau, Brazil around 1840. At that time, they were still called carbonado because their shape resembled small pieces of charcoal.
Natural black diamonds are rare enough that only about three metric tons are reportedly mined worldwide. But this type is one of the strongest forms of natural diamond. Black diamonds, or carbonado diamonds, are found only in Brazil and the Central African Republic.
The natural black color of this gem actually comes from many small, dark inclusions and cracks, more precisely called polycrystalline, a material of amorphous carbon, graphite, and diamond.
Most may be blurry, others may have a grainy appearance. Some are black but have dark brown or dark green bodies.
