SAN FRANCISCO – Owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk is considering bringing the service outside Europe.
As reported by Reuters, (19/10/2023) citing an Insider news report on Wednesday, the move was a response to new regulations imposed on internet platforms in the region.
Meanwhile, sources close to X claim that Musk has discussed removing the app in Europe or preventing users in the European Union (EU) from accessing it.
Last August, the EU passed the Digital Services Act (DSA) outlining rules to prevent the spread of harmful content, prohibit or limit certain practices that target specific users, and share some internal data with relevant authorities and researchers.
EU Industry Chief Thierry Breton on October 10 called on Musk to address the spread of ‘false information’ on X’s social media channels following the latest conflict in Palestine.
The move was ostensibly to comply with new European Union online content regulations, but was rejected by Musk as an attempt by the West to control the spread of information about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict according to his narrative.
Breton said he had evidence that X, formerly known as Twitter, was being used to spread illegal content and misinformation regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the EU.
Musk appeared to directly respond to Breton’s statement and said that his company stands firm in providing an open and transparent news source
