Jeddah, Arab Saudi —
Member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should impose an oil embargo and other sanctions on Israel and expel all Israeli ambassadors, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said on Wednesday (18/10).
An urgent OIC meeting is underway in Jeddah, to discuss the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, after an explosion at a Gaza hospital on Tuesday night killed a large number of Palestinians.
“The foreign minister called for an immediate and comprehensive embargo on Israel by Islamic countries, including oil sanctions, in addition to expelling the Israeli ambassador if relations with the Zionist regime are established,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Amirabdollahian also called for the formation of a team of Muslim lawyers to document potential war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza. Iran does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
Before the explosion at the Gaza hospital on Tuesday, health authorities in Gaza said at least 3,000 people had been killed in 11 days of Israeli bombardment that began after an Oct. 7 Hamas attack on the southern Israeli region that killed 1,300 people and about 200 people were taken to Gaza as hostages.
