US Senator Jeanne Shaheen, senior member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator Peter Welch called on Saturday in Podgorica that the new government should not have representatives who do not support the country’s western path.
They made the comments after meeting with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic.
“The citizens of Montenegro have shown that they want the rule of law, as well as being in the European Union with all the economic opportunities that membership brings,” Senator Welch told the Montenegrin media.
Senator Shaheen said that she has reservations for any political party that does not support the aspirations of citizens to stay in NATO, that do not support Ukraine, and do not have aspirations towards EU membership.
“All these, as far as I understand, are efforts supported by about 80 percent of the population. Therefore, it would be pointless to have representatives in the government who do not support those goals,” said Senator Shaheen.
Speaking about the situation in Kosovo, Senator Welch said that violence has been used as a political tool for persuasion.
“Justice must be done. “Especially in the Balkans, you don’t need us to remind you of what happened before when violence was used as a means of getting your point of view,” said Senator Welch.
He added that efforts should be focused around reconciliation steps.
Senator Shaheen said that it is necessary to consider how to ensure long-term stability in Kosovo.
“The KFOR mission there is very important to help secure the borders, but the real answer is stability, so that the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo sit down at the table to find a peaceful solution to their differences,” he said. Mrs. Shaheen.
