PURWOKERTO.SUARA.COM, BANYUMAS- The Student Creativity Program (PKM) Team for Students from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Muhammadiyah University, Purwokerto (UMP), succeeded in obtaining funding from the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs through PKM- Exact Research.
The PKM-RE group chaired by Nur Siti with four students as members, namely Zahra Meidiva Andrias, Metta Melani, Alma Fina Rachmatillah, and Oktianah made an innovation in the form of Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLC) from sembung leaf ethyl acetate extract for the treatment of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus infections Aureus (MRSA) which is caused by Staphylococcus aureus and has become resistant.
“We carried out this research because patients infected with MRSA bacteria apparently have a high risk of death compared to patients infected with other bacteria. “Apart from that, sembung leaves have antibacterial properties and are easy to find around our environment. Seeing this urgency, we made research innovations related to antibacterial preparations in the form of NLC (Nanostructured Lipid Carriers) preparations from sembung leaf ethyl acetate extract,” explained Team Leader Nur Siti when met in Purwokerto, Thursday (12/10/2023).
He further said that the innovation carried out was utilizing the wealth of native plants in Indonesia by making NLC preparations which had never been used in the treatment of MRSA.

These research activities were carried out from July-October 2023 at the Pharmaceutical Biology Laboratory, Pharmaceutical Technology Laboratory, and UMP Microbiology Laboratory.
The NLC preparation testing that has been carried out by this group is the initial testing stage in the form of physical product evaluation and in vitro testing.
“NLC preparations have good drug release and delivery capabilities. “This research is expected to provide evidence of the antibacterial activity of the NLC preparation of sembung leaf ethyl acetate extract against MRSA bacteria,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the supervisor of apt. Arini Syarifah, M.Si said, PKM is a place for student creativity to become aware of problems that exist in society and provide appropriate solutions.
“As a supervisor, I hope that the innovations made by these pharmacy students can be developed into alternative treatments for MRSA and will later be able to obtain distribution permits for use by the public,” he concluded.
