JAKARTA – Sandy Walsh played a role in the Indonesian National Team’s landslide victory against Brunei Darussalam in the first round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifications in the Asian zone which was held at GBK, Thursday (12/10/2023). His position which can adapt to coach Shin Tae-yong’s tactics can be called magical.
Special attention was paid to the role played by Sandy Walsh in the team when the Indonesian National Team won 6-0 over Brunei. Coach Shin Tae-yong placed Sandy in a midfielder role, even though previously he was better known as a right back.
Although the use of Sandy in this position may seem surprising, Shin Tae-yong is known to like to carry out tactical experiments and place players in roles that are unusual for him. Sandy himself has the ability to play several different positions, including:
1. Right Back
Sandy’s original position is right back, responsible for maintaining the right side of the defense. Apart from his defensive duties, the right-back can also support the team’s attack by providing crosses or supporting counter-attacks.
Even though Sandy is known as a right-back at his club, during his two appearances with the Indonesian national team, he has never played in this position. Instead, Shin Tae-yong has chosen Asnawi Mangkualam to play at right back.
2. Midfielder
In the last match against Brunei, Sandy was entrusted to play as a midfielder. Shin Tae-yong feels that Sandy is suitable for this role, considering that he also played as a midfielder at the start of his career.
3. Central Defender
Sandy’s debut with the Indonesian national team occurred against Turkmenistan in the FIFA Matchday match on Friday (8/9/2023). In that match, he played as a central defender with Jordi Amat and Alfeandra Dewangga.
Even though the central defender position is not Sandy’s main role, he appeared solid during his appearance in this match. The Indonesian national team’s defense managed to keep goals conceded during the match.
