Gilberto Ramirez Wants to Become the First Mexican Boxer to Champion the Cruiserweight/Boxing Scene
Gilberto Ramirez is determined to become the first Mexican boxer to become world cruiserweight boxing champion. Gilberto Ramirez’s optimism soars after defeating Joe Smith Jr. in the cruiserweight debut of the former WBO super middleweight world champion.
More comfortable at the highest weight of his career, Ramirez (45-1, 30 KOs) boxed effectively and moved more than usual on his way to outpointing Joe Smith (28-5, 22 KOs) by unanimous decision in a 10-round bout at The Chelsea, inside The Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas. Winning nine rounds each on judges Tim Cheatham, David Sutherland and Steve Weisfeld moved Ramirez closer to a shot at the cruiserweight world title as their fight was a WBA eliminator.
Ramirez enters the ring ranked seventh among challengers to WBA cruiserweight world champion Arsen Goulamirian of Armenia (27-0, 18 KOs). The Mexican southpaw will also welcome the opportunity to fight WBC cruiserweight champion Badou Jack (28-3-3, 17 KOs).
“I mean, anyone. Any champion, that’s what I want,” Ramirez told a group of reporters after he beat Smith. “I want to be the first Mexican cruiserweight champion. And that’s my goal. That’s what I’m working hard for.”
The 32-year-old Ramirez still hasn’t given up on securing the big fight he’s been eyeing for years. To convince Canelo Alvarez to finally fight him, Ramirez realized that it would be helpful if he could win the cruiserweight title, so that Canelo Alvarez could challenge him to become champion at middleweight.
