JAKARTA – Technological concepts that empower disabled groups are still rarely developed. One of the start-ups in Indonesia introduced innovative assistive devices for disabled people with bionic aesthetics, Raga Arm.
This Raga Arm prototype has been tested in international technology competitions for the disabled called CYBATHLON Challenges 2022 and ETH Zurich Switzerland 2023. They achieved two achievements, namely Patent Pending Technology, Adjustable Socket System (ASS) and Versatile Gripping Technology (VGT). This technology has also achieved achievements at world level and received a Gold Award at the 2022 Indonesian Healthcare Award.
Recently, Raga Arm developer start-up, Karla Bionics, became the only finalist for the top 50 or RLTV50 team from Indonesia in the world competition, the 11th Edition of the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition, winning an award in the INTA Foundation Social Innovation category. .
“Raga Arm technology is not the most sophisticated, but it is hoped that it can help the main obstacle for friends with disabilities, namely confidence to interact with their immediate environment,” explained Karla Bionics Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Arief Indra Muharam.
Not only that, Karla Bionics also won an award from The Maybank ASEAN Startup Award for the 14 best start-ups in ASEAN.
Alya Hanun, Founding Member and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Karla Bionics, added that technological innovation that uses an approach to Indonesia’s socio-economic conditions can inspire countries around the world such as India, Argentina, Ghana, Israel, even developed countries such as Singapore, England, China and the United States.
The only founding member of Karla Bionics who is still a student is grateful for the opportunity to market the Raga Arm prototype which is still in the development process.
Karla Bionics is a start-up company from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) which focuses on empowering people with disabilities by developing assistive devices with an appropriate technological approach. This means that the technology developed is adapted to socio-economic conditions in Indonesia. ‘Empower disabled people to become proud active’ is a campaign carried out by Karla Bionics, this social campaign is aimed at being part of the change in people with disabilities from being disabled or helpless, then becoming disabled (different ability person).
