JAKARTA – Many internet service providers are nervous. Apparently, this is because Elon Musk’s Starnlink satellite internet service will enter Indonesia. This concern was conveyed by the General Chair of the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), Muhammad Arif.
At the Selular Business Forum (SBF) 2023 event which was held in South Newsdelivers.com, Monday (2/10), Muhammad Arif revealed that many internet service providers, especially small ones, are worried that the business they run will be eroded.
According to Muhammad Arif, internet service providers’ anxiety grew after hearing the news that Starlink would provide special services in Indonesia at low prices. Even below average, it can damage market prices.
“Starlink is currently a hot issue. The bottom line is that ISPs (internet service providers), especially the small ones, are nervous. They are afraid that their market will be eroded. Especially markets in suburban areas. “They are worried that they will be replaced,” said Muhammad Arif.
He said that Starlink would allegedly provide special services at prices below the published rate. “But I don’t know exactly how much it will cost. “This is what worries ISP friends, they come and give prices that can disrupt the market,” he added.
For your information, Starlink itself is a satellite-based internet service which is considered to be a tough competitor for local internet service providers who still rely on Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers and fiber optic cables.
Starlink is said to be able to provide its users with faster internet speeds than ordinary BTS towers. The internet speed is predicted to reach 200 mbps.
Because it uses satellites, internet users can access the internet from anywhere. Including from even the most remote places. They only need to point the modem into space, and the internet connection can be connected immediately.
