An appeals court in New York on Thursday (28/9) rejected former President Donald Trump’s attempt to suspend a civil trial in a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The decision came days after Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that the former president had committed fraud for years and stripped several of his companies as punishment. With this decision, the case can continue.
The ruling by the state’s intermediate appeals court clears the way for Judge Arthur Engoron to preside over a non-jury trial set to begin Monday in Manhattan in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil lawsuit.
Trump is listed among dozens of witnesses who may appear, potentially setting up a courtroom showdown with the judge. Tuesday’s ruling on Trump’s fraud has the potential to upend his real estate empire and force him to hand over his prized properties in New York – such as Trump Tower, Wall Street office buildings, golf courses and suburban homes. .
Trump has denied any wrongdoing, arguing that some of his assets are worth far more than those listed in annual financial statements, which Engoron said were used to obtain loans and make deals. Trump argued that the report had a disclaimer that absolved him of responsibility. His lawyers have said they will appeal. (em/hour)
