JAKARTA – Mark Zuckerberg introduced a number of new AI products at the Meta Connect conference in Silicon Valley. Namely, bots capable of producing photo-realistic images and smart glasses designed to answer user questions, as well as updated virtual reality headsets.
Zuckerberg announced a new generation of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses will launch on October 17, priced at USD 299. The glasses will feature a new Meta AI assistant and enable live streaming to Facebook and Instagram, improving the photo-taking capabilities of the previous generation.
Thus, these smart glasses make it possible to see and hear what the user sees and broadcast it in real-time. This smart glasses technology seeks to remove dependence on smartphones as a mainstay device.
In addition to smart glasses, the latest Quest mixed reality headset will ship on October 10, introducing Meta’s first consumer-accessible generative AI product. Among them is Meta AI, a chatbot capable of generating text responses and photo-realistic images.
Meta AI will function as an assistant in smart glasses, starting with a beta launch in the United States. A software update coming next year will equip the assistant with the ability to identify places and objects as well as perform language translations.
Meta developed Meta AI using a custom model based on the Llama 2 large language model. Meanwhile the Chatbot will have access to real-time information through a partnership with Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
In an interview with Reuters, Meta Global Affairs President Nick Clegg highlighted the steps taken to filter personal details from training data and the restrictions imposed on the tool to prevent the creation of realistic depictions of public figures.
Meta also revealed plans to create a platform that would allow developers and users to design custom AI bots, provide profiles on Instagram and Facebook, and eventually integrate them into the metaverse as avatars.
