NEW YORK – The ChatGPT platform has a feature that can answer AI chatbot users’ questions with five different voices. The feature is part of a growing number of mobile apps and follows in the footsteps of voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri.
Users can now speak aloud to the AI chatbot and it will reply with its own synthetic voice. ChatGPT has been given five different voices, both male and female, trained on actors employed by OpenAI.
The US company behind the ChatGPT technology claims that they are much more realistic than rival voice assistants. OpenAI plans to allow users to create their own voice assistants in the future.
Spotify announced it is trialling technology to translate podcasts into other languages, by imitating the original host’s AI-generated voice. Voice assistants like Alexa and Siri have long allowed people to interact with their devices via smartphones, tablets and laptops.
But chatbots have much stronger language capabilities, with the ability to write emails, poems and riffs on any topic instantly. OpenAI believes that speaking is a more natural way to interact with ChatGPT.
OpenAI is rolling out the feature to everyone who subscribes to its ‘Plus’ edition, which costs £16 per month. “We are trying to make ChatGPT more useful and useful,” said Joanne Jang, product manager at OpenAI to MIT Technology Review quoted by SINDOnews from the Daily Mail page, Tuesday (26/9/2023).
As part of the upgrade, OpenAI also announced that ChatGPT can now also understand images. By uploading or taking a photo, ChatGPT will respond with a description.
In one demo, the company showed a chatbot a picture of a child’s math homework with a Sudoku-like puzzle and asked how to solve it. ChatGPT replies with the correct steps.
ChatGPT’s image recognition capabilities have been trialled by a company called Be My Eyes, which makes apps for visually impaired people. This application helps to know what is ahead of them.
