3 Hadiths and verses of the Qur’an about the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW
Here are some hadiths and verses recorded in the Qur’an about the celebration of the Prophet’s Mawlid:
1. Surat Yunus verse 58
Posting from the detik.com page, according to Sayyid Muhammad bin Alawi Al-Maliki Al-Hasani, rejoicing over the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW is recommended as Allah SWT says in Surat Yunus verse 58, as follows:
Say, “By the grace of God and His mercy,” let them rejoice in that. It is better than what they gather.
It means:
“Say, with the grace of God and His mercy (Prophet Muhammad SAW) let them welcome with joy.” (QS. Yunus: 58)
2. Hadith Narrated by Muslim in the Sahih Book
The Prophet said:
Whoever establishes a good practice in Islam will have its reward, and the reward of whoever acts upon it after him, without their rewards being diminished in the slightest. He blamed a bad practice; he bears its burden and the burden of those who did it after him, without any of their burdens being diminished.
It means:
“Whoever starts a good thing in Islam, he will get a reward from his good deeds, and he will also get a reward from those who follow him after him. without diminishing the reward they get.” (HR. Muslim)
The hadith explains the freedom for the scholars of the people of the Prophet Muhammad SAW to make new things that do not contradict the Qur’an, Sunnah, Atsar, and Ijma’.
The commemoration of the Prophet’s birthday or the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW is a new good thing and does not violate any of the things mentioned in these arguments. It can be concluded that celebrating the Prophet’s birthday is permitted because it is a way to get rewards from Allah SWT.
3. Hadith Narrated by Muslim in the Sahih Book
When asked about why he always fasts on Mondays, the Prophet answered:
That was the day I was born
It means:
“That day was the day I was born.” (HR. Muslim)
This hadith provides an indication that the Prophet always fasted on Mondays as a form of gratitude to Allah SWT. This is also a signal for all Muslims to do good deeds on the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, such as reading the Koran, giving alms, and doing other good deeds.
The celebration of the Prophet’s birthday is only valid to be done on the 2nd, 8th, 10th, or 12th of Rabi’ul Awal.
As narrated by Imam Ibnu Ishaq also from Ibnu Abbas:
The Messenger of God was born on a Monday, twelve nights during the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, the year of the Elephant.
It means:
“The Messenger of Allah was born on Monday, the twelfth, on a quiet night in the month of Rabiul Awal, the Year of the Elephant.”
