Age is not a barrier for Adyos Astan to make Indonesia proud on the national and international stage. This wheelchair table tennis athlete still looks serious while undergoing national training in Solo, ahead of the 2023 Asian Para Games.
Adyos Astan is known to be 55 years old. He has received hundreds of medals from various events, both national and ASEAN level. This proves that age is not a barrier for Adyos Astan to make achievements.
Adyos Astan was actually born in normal conditions. However, at the age of two he had a fever and had to be taken to the doctor, and he was discovered to be suffering from polio.
However, Adyos seemed to ignore the shortcomings he experienced. He said that since childhood he really liked several sports.
Of the many sports he has tried, Adyos is interested in table tennis. “From the first time I took part in the tournament, I felt like I could do it and I have continued to do this until now. When I was in the village, it was very difficult to become an athlete because of limited facilities, sometimes I moved places. However, this did not hinder her enthusiasm.”
Initially mastering wheelchair table tennis was difficult because you had to be proficient in table tennis and smoothly move the wheelchair in the direction of the ball. It took adaptation to be like now. For him, this chair is like a leg so it looks like it is already fused.
Adyos admitted that he never felt down because when he was in the village and growing up like small children in general, it started to feel like that when he went to school in the city.
Other friends were able to carry out activities and he was the only one who experienced limitations, and this actually fueled Adyos’ enthusiasm and received an education at a public school. 1993 was a turning point. He managed to reach the final in the National Disabled Sports Week (Porcanas).
Since then he has often represented Indonesia in various international championships. There have been many achievements and medals, there have been more than a hundred in Czech singles and won gold medals for individuals and in Taichung Taipei we won gold medals in doubles.
