TEL AVIV – In the Hebrew Bible, Barak was the name of a brave ruler and military commander who led an attack on Canaanite forces at the city of Hazor. This word also means “lightning” in Hebrew.
The Israeli Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) announced the incorporation of new tanks into the Armored Corps on Tuesday (19/9/2023).
Israel claims the tank operates with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Media reported, “Several advanced capabilities comprise the functionality of the new super tank, including an improved targeting system, enhanced fire capabilities that enable precise targeting during the day and night, radio, and night vision cameras.”
Artificial intelligence adds functions such as a targeting system that Israel claims incorporates “independent data processing and scanning capabilities.”
This technology assists each of the four tank operators in completing their tasks while providing additional information about the surrounding environment and nearby opposition forces.
Advanced missile systems and high-tech helmets for tank commanders are also featured.
“The new era ushered in by the ‘Barak’ tank is an extraordinary leap and a clear expression of technological capabilities that continue to increase and secure the (Israel Defense Forces’) qualitative superiority, both in defense and attack,” explained Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
“I express my deepest appreciation to the engineers and professionals of MANTAK, the Army and all those involved in this project,” he said.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in military applications, adding functions such as target recognition and route finding.
Iran recently launched an AI-powered mini tank robot and claims to produce drones that utilize the technology.
Meanwhile, the US Army has developed remotely controlled ships utilizing AI.
