JAKARTA – Scientists predict that the asteroid Bennu will hit Earth on September 24 2182. This asteroid measures around 492 meters and has a mass of around 80 million tons.

If it hits Earth, Bennu will release energy equivalent to 22 atomic bombs.
As reported by the Daily Star, Monday (18/9/2023), the probability of Bennu colliding with Earth is 1 in 2,700, or around 0.037%. This means that there is a 99.963% chance that Bennu will not hit Earth.
However, scientists continue to monitor Bennu closely. They used data from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which carried out missions to Bennu in 2018 and 2020. This data has helped scientists update their models of Bennu’s path.
If Bennu does hit Earth, the collision would cause significant damage. The asteroid would create a crater several kilometers wide and release a shock wave that could cause damage over a wide area.
Scientists are developing technology to ward off potentially dangerous asteroids. One such technology is a thrust system that can be used to change the path of an asteroid.
Another technology being developed is a laser system that can destroy asteroids.
Although the chances of Bennu colliding with Earth are very small, it is important to keep an eye on this asteroid. Bennu is one of the most dangerous asteroids known, and a collision with Earth would have devastating impacts.
Bennu is a very geologically active asteroid. It has many large holes and mounds, which were most likely caused by impacts with other asteroids or comets. Bennu also has a lot of debris orbiting it, which was likely caused by the same impact.
