Oscar De La Hoya said Saul Canelo Alvarez had difficulty fighting a boxer with a style similar to Dmitry Bivol who beat him. Oscar De La Hoya reviewed this analysis and also gave advice to Jermell Charlo ahead of his big fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez.
Dmitry Bivol, the WBA light heavyweight champion of the world, surprised forecasters last year. Bivol unanimously defeated Saul Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed 76.2 kg world champion, over 12 rounds in the 79.3 kg title fight. This is the second defeat of Saul Canelo Alvarez’s career, and the first since he lost on points to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
Bivol’s speed, in-out movement and punch combinations left Canelo looking confused. And it’s those qualities, says De La Hoya, that will help Charlo, the 69.8 kg middleweight world champion, beat Canelo for the undisputed 76.2 kg world title on September 30 at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.
“Any style you give Canelo that’s similar to Bivol, he’s going to have a hard time,” De La Hoya told FightHubTV. “Whoever stays alert, whoever throws a jab in front of his face, whoever knows how to keep his distance, like Bivol does, Canelo will have a hard time.
“That’s the point. Once again, he’s walking on quicksand. That’s his style. It’s worked for him all along. He’s used to taking his opponents down, knocking them out, with great force. Anyone who tries to fist fight him, and has the same style as Bivol, will have a hard time.”
“He can take advantage of him (Canelo Alvarez), Charlo, if he knows how to use distance,” continued De La Hoya. “The distance you get with his feet, the distance you obviously use with your jab, you keep the distance. But if you know how to combine footwork with a jab or a right hand or a combination, then that’s the perfect combination to win the fight against Canelo,” he said. De La Hoya.
Oscar De La Hoya, of course, once promoted Saul Canelo Alvarez before their falling out. Canelo parted ways with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy in 2020. Over the next few years, Canelo mostly fought under Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, but he changed partners earlier this year when he signed a three-fight contract with Al’s Premier Boxing Champions Haymon.
