JAKARTA – A very rare blue lobster was found by fishermen in Plymoth Sound, Devon, the southern coast of England. The lobster is then released back into the wild.
Experts at the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow say the chances of catching the rare lobster are about one in two million.
Mallory Haas, from The Ships Project, admitted that he was very surprised to see this creature in the wild. “I’ve never seen a lobster that blue. “I’ve seen some in aquariums with a hint of blue, that’s very common, but completely blue is very rare,” he said as quoted by the Mirror, Friday (15/9/2023).
“I’ve seen lobsters in aquariums before that were very white, like ghosts, but this type of lobster was very different.”
The rare lobster’s blue color comes from genetic pox caused by environmental factors. So even if you have children, they won’t automatically be blue like their parents.
Lobsters come in many different colors, but are generally brownish-orange when placed in water and turn red when cooked.
Researchers at the University of Maine’s Lobster Institute say blue lobsters are rare. However, red lobsters are even rarer, namely around one in 10 million.
Yellow lobsters can also be found, but they are much rarer, namely one in 30 million. Meanwhile, albino lobsters are very rare, around one in 100 million.
