North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reported to be on a train en route to Russia. South Korean media reported the news on Monday, citing government officials.
However, neither Russia nor North Korea have officially confirmed the visit. Earlier, the media also reported, citing sources from US officials, that Kim and his Russian counterpart could meet as relations between the two countries grow closer.
In visits it really happens, this would be Kim’s first trip to a foreign country since the Covid-19 pandemic.
With its borders closed due to the pandemic, North Korea has only recently begun to ease travel restrictions.
This would also be Kim Jong Un’s tenth trip since assuming office in 2011.
The West is aware that North Korea could offer to supply Russia with weapons to help it fight in Ukraine and has warned leader Kim Jong Un that “this would be a serious mistake.”
