MOSCOW – Russia uses anti-UAV nets to protect its warplanes at military bases from the threat of Ukrainian aerial drone attacks. Previously, Russia used a pile of used car tires on the fuselage of a T-95 Bear bomber to counter Ukrainian drone attacks.
Quoted from the Bulgarian Military page, Sunday (10/9/2023), a hangar was built from metal columns on both sides along the plane. The building is strengthened with lateral columns with a minimum angle of 45 degrees, reinforced with 90 degree columns embedded in the ground.
The two rows of columns on each side of the hangar are further reinforced with metal beams following a 45 degree angle. From above, the hangar is covered with a transverse net to provide the main defense against kamikaze drone attacks.
The idea was apparently taken from the popular early war practice of covering the turrets of heavy land combat vehicles, including tanks, with metal grilles or homemade cages. “Photos spread on the Telegram social network show Russia’s newest hangar to protect aircraft from suspected drone attacks,” wrote Bulgarian Military.
From first appearances, it appears that this is a temporary or untested workaround. The plane placed in the makeshift hangar was a model of a Russian fighter plane or a fighter plane that had long been discontinued.
Overall, this is a decision that was likely made in the last few days or weeks. Previously there were photos of a closed Tu-95 bomber, whose wings and part of the fuselage were covered by car tires.
Later, similar photos emerged for the Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber. These images received widespread international response. So the emergence of this new hangar net with anti-UAV netting is a solution that will be implemented in Russia.
There is still no official information regarding the location where the photos were taken and whether the hangar’s efficiency and durability tests have passed or not. One Telegram account stated that this hangar was placed at the airport used by the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) to launch attacks on Ukrainian territory.
