CHANGZHOU – Indonesia is certain to have a ticket to the 2023 China Open semifinals after Jonatan Christie clashed with Shesar Hiren Rhustavito in the quarter-finals. Facing civil war later, Jonathan admitted that he was ready to fight.
To qualify for the quarter-finals, Jonathan Christie had to work hard to beat Canada’s representative, Brian Yang, with a score of 12-21, 21-15 and 21-14. The match took place at the Olympic Sports Center Gynmasium, Changzhou, China, on Thursday (7/9/2023) afternoon WIB.
The badminton player who is familiarly called Jojo revealed that the wind was the cause of defeat in the first game. Jonatan Christie explained that in the second and third games, he managed to recover after playing more comfortably and his opponent was tired.
“In the first game, the wind was very strong on the side of the court and the shuttlecock stopped suddenly when I was ready to attack, so I made a lot of mistakes,” said Jonatan Christie in a statement from PBSI, Thursday (7/9/2023).
“In the second game, the opponent several times played tenaciously and made me impatient, but I tried to stay calm. In the end, he experienced difficulties of his own. In the third game, I felt more comfortable because I had adapted to the windy court and the situation.” he added.
Even though he managed to win and advance to the quarter-finals, Jonatan Christie was dissatisfied with his performance. He is committed to performing better when he faces Shesar Hiren Rhustavito in the quarter-finals.
“Tomorrow I will play against Mas Vito, and whoever wins, it will still be for Indonesia. But to be honest, today I felt my performance was not as good compared to the first round. I have to improve my adaptation to the windy court and the timing of my shots for the next match,” he closed.
Shesar Hiren Rhustavito also managed to advance to the quarter-finals after defeating Malaysia’s representative, NG Tze Yong, with a score of 18-21, 21-11 and 22-20. The meeting between Shesar Hiren Rhustavito and Jonatan Christie will mean that Indonesia only has one representative in the semifinals of the China Open 2023.
