TEHERAN – Not only weapons matters, Iranian electronic technology has disrupted the communications and navigation systems of United States warships in the Persian Gulf.

As reported by Cimsec, this has happened several times in recent years, and has caused concern in the United States and its allies.
In 2019, Iran seized three foreign commercial tankers in the Persian Gulf. The United States Navy accused Iran of using an Electronic Warfare (EW) system to disrupt the tankers’ communications and navigation systems.
This made it difficult for the tankers to communicate with US warships and they were eventually confiscated by Iran.
In 2021, the US Navy also reported that its ships had experienced communications and navigation disruptions while in the Persian Gulf.
The US Navy accused Iran of using EW systems to harass its ships.
Iran has denied the accusations. Iran says it uses the EW system to protect its waters from vessels suspected of committing violations.
Iran’s disruption of EW systems could have serious consequences for United States warships. This interference can make it difficult for these ships to communicate with other ships, coordinate movements, and use their weapons systems. This can increase the risk of accidents and conflicts.
The United States has stepped up its efforts to counter Iran’s intrusion of EW systems. The US Navy has developed new systems to counter EW interference, and has increased its training to deal with these situations.
The United States has also worked with its allies to increase its military presence in the Persian Gulf. This is intended to send a message to Iran that the United States and its allies will continue to protect freedom of navigation in the region.
