SEOUL – North Korean leader (North Korea), Kim Jong-un, called on his military to always be ready to fight in order to thwart enemy plans to attack. The call was made when the United States (US), South Korea (South Korea) and Japan held trilateral naval exercises to deal with North Korea’s growing nuclear threat.
The US and South Korean militaries have separately held bilateral summer exercises since last week.
North Korea views the US-involved exercises as invasion drills, although Washington and its partners argue their exercises are defensive in nature.
Kim Jong-un said the waters off the Korean Peninsula have become unstable with the danger of nuclear war due to US-led hostilities. This was stated by Kim Jong-un in his speech commemorating Navy Day according to North Korea’s KCNA news agency.
He cited US drills with allies, the placement of more powerful US weapons assets in waters near the Korean Peninsula, and the recent US-South Korea-Japan summit where an agreement to enhance defense cooperation was reached to counter North Korea’s nuclear program.
“Due to the reckless confrontational actions of the US and other hostile forces, the waters off the Korean Peninsula have shrunk to become the world’s largest concentration center of armaments, the most unstable waters with the danger of nuclear war,” Kim said as reported by DW, Tuesday (29/8) /2023).
Kim also called President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida the “gang bosses” of the three countries.
“The current situation requires our navy to exert all its efforts to complete war readiness to maintain constant combat vigilance and be prepared to break the enemy’s will to fight in an emergency,” Kim said as quoted by News9.
The South Korea-US-Japan drills on Tuesday in international waters off the coast of South Korea’s Jeju Island involved naval destroyers from all three countries.
