MOSCOW – The first Russian train carrying commercial goods has arrived in Iran, en route to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This will be the first trip of the train through Iranian territory.
The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that the transit cargo train entered Iran on Saturday (26/8/2023) via the Incheh-Boroun border with Turkmenistan, heading to Bandar Abbas in the south to be sent to Saudi Arabia.
The agency quoted Director General of Customs in Golestan Province Shahriar Shahriari as saying the train had 36 containers and passed through Iran as part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
He gave an example, this route will reduce delivery times by several days.
This agreement will also allow the export of Russian goods to Saudi Arabia while reducing customs tariffs to almost half of the normal amount.
“On June 21, a container train bound for Saudi Arabia departed from Russia’s Chelyabinsk freight station as part of the North-South Transport Corridor via Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran,” reported Russian news agency Sputnik.
The Russian ambassador to Riyadh stated, in an interview with Sputnik in mid-February, that his country and Saudi Arabia intend to increase the volume of trade exchanges to USD 5 billion.
The Russian Ambassador added that bilateral trade and economic relations are characterized by positive dynamics. He noted that the volume of trade exchanges between the two countries amounted to USD 1.6 billion.
