MOSCOW – The Kremlin has dismissed speculation that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the plane crash believed to have killed Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Many view the plane crash as a revenge killing for the mercenary group’s failed rebellion.
“Now, of course, there is a lot of speculation around this disaster and the tragic deaths of the passengers on board, including Yevgeny Prigozhin. Of course, in the West, all these speculations are presented from a certain point of view. All of this is an absolute lie,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as quoted from Sputnik, Friday (25/8/2023).
Peskov said there had been no meeting between Putin and Prigozhin, adding he did not yet know whether the Russian president would attend the mercenary group leader’s funeral due to his busy schedule.
When asked about the investigation, Peskov said that there were still few facts and noted that more details should be clarified during the investigation.
“The official results of the investigation into the plane crash will be made public,” Peskov said.
Regarding the fate of the Wagner Group, Peskov said, de jure the group does not exist as a structure so it is difficult to say what will happen in the future.
“Don’t forget that there is no such structure, there is no Wagner PMC de jure. There is indeed a Wagner group, as the president has repeatedly said, which has made a great contribution to special military operations,” Peskov explained.
