China on Sunday (Aug. 25) voiced its opposition to the latest U.S. sanctions on Chinese companies allegedly linked to Russia's war in Ukraine, saying it would take necessary measures to safeguard the rights and interests of the country's businesses.
The United States on Friday announced sanctions on hundreds of companies in Russia and across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, accusing them of providing products and services that enable Russia to wage war and help it evade sanctions. The State Department said it was concerned about the “large dual use of exports” from China to Russia.
China's Commerce Ministry said Sunday it firmly opposes the U.S. move to place Chinese companies on its export control list, which bars companies on the list from doing business with U.S. companies without special permission, which would be difficult to obtain.
The ministry said the US action was a “typical unilateral sanction,” adding that it would disrupt global trade rules and order, and impact the stability of global supply chains and industries.
“China calls on the US to immediately stop its wrong practices and take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.
According to the US State Department, a number of China-based companies have supplied machine tools and components to Russian companies. (jm/ka/rs)
