A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted Thursday, spewing red-hot lava and smoke, the country's meteorological office said. It was the sixth eruption since the volcano began erupting in December.

Footage from a live feed of the situation on Thursday night from the area showed red-hot lava gushing from its base.

Studies have shown that magma is accumulating underground, prompting warnings of new volcanic activity in the area, which lies south of the capital, Reykjavik.

The latest eruption on the Reykjavik Peninsula, home to about 30,000 people or nearly 8 percent of the country's population, ended on June 22 after the volcano spewed molten rock for 24 days.

Iceland, roughly the size of the US state of Kentucky, has more than 30 active volcanoes, making the Northern European island nation a prime destination for volcano tourism – a niche that attracts thrill-seekers. (uh)
