Police in Germany said three people were killed and four others were seriously injured in an attack on Friday at a festival in the western German city of Solingen.

Police said the perpetrator is on the run, German news agency dpa reported, citing police sources as saying the attack was carried out with a knife. The attack took place in the central square, Fronhof.

Mayor Tim Kurzbach said in a Facebook post that “this evening, we in Solingen are all shocked. We all wanted to celebrate the anniversary of our city together and now we have dead and wounded to mourn.”

The “Festival of Diversity”, marking the city's 650th anniversary, began on Friday and was meant to last until Sunday, with several stages in central streets offering attractions such as music, cabaret and acrobatics.

Solingen has about 160,000 inhabitants and is located near the larger cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf.
