Former President Donald Trump campaigned in Michigan on Tuesday promising to “make America safe again” as Democrats continue their convention in Chicago where they will formally announce Vice President Kamala Harris as their vice presidential nominee and where many of the speakers cited problems his legal.
Campaigning in a swing state, Mr Trump attacked Vice President Harris, a former California Attorney General, saying if she won she would “bring crime, chaos, destruction and death”.
“You're going to see levels of crime that you've never seen before. … I will establish law, order, security and peace.”
Mr Trump has tried in recent weeks to dampen the enthusiasm Ms Harris has sparked after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her as a candidate.
Former President Trump's rally on Tuesday was in the wake of several activities aimed at presenting his vision on certain issues of concern to voters.
But Mr. Trump has used these occasions to personally attack Ms. Harris and hit out at President Biden.
On Tuesday in Michigan, the former President painted a bleak picture of life in the United States and spoke of the danger of a Ms. Harris presidency, though he did not give specific examples.
“It's crazy. You can't go out on the street to buy bread. They beat you, rob you, rape you… it's time for a change.”
The image of Mr Trump making such claims, surrounded by law enforcement officers backing him up, was in stark contrast to the Democratic Assembly.
Speakers in this Assembly reminded Americans that Mr. Trump is the first former President to be found guilty of serious crimes, and still faces numerous indictments, including for his efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election.
