Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah group said it fired several rockets at Israeli military positions in the annexed Golan Heights on Tuesday, in a “response” to an Israeli attack on eastern Lebanon the day before.

Hezbollah launched a “heavy rocket attack” on two Israeli army positions in the occupied Golan Heights, in “response to the Israeli enemy's attacks in the Bekaa Valley” which, according to sources close to Hezbollah, targeted a weapons depot in the eastern region.

The Israeli military confirmed that some 55 projectiles were identified as having crossed from Lebanese territory.

“Some of the projectiles were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas. No injuries were reported,” the military said in a statement, adding that some of the rockets caused fires.

The military said its forces attacked one of the rocket launch sites.

The latest attack by Iran-backed Hezbollah came after Israel hit a weapons depot in eastern Lebanon on Monday.

Israel carried out the strikes after a soldier in northern Israel was killed by Hezbollah fire, adding to the death toll in 10 months of cross-border fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

The violence left 585 people dead in Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah fighters, and at least 128 civilians were among the dead, according to an AFP tally.

On the Israeli side, including in the annexed Golan Heights, 23 soldiers and 26 civilians were reported killed, according to military figures.

Fears of escalation grew after Hezbollah and Iran committed to retaliating for an Israeli strike in Beirut last month that killed top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr. That came ahead of an attack in Tehran that killed Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh. (ah/rs)
