Chicago Fire and Xherdan Shaqiri have agreed to terminate the midfielder's contract, officials announced Wednesday.

The 32-year-old from Switzerland has scored two goals and two assists in 12 games this season, but has not played since May 18.

“After discussions with Xherdan, we have mutually agreed that terminating the contract is in the best interest of all parties”, said the sporting director of the Fire team, Georg Heitz. “We thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”

In February 2022, Shaqiri was transferred to Chicago from the French club Lyon. Shaqiri played in 75 games, scoring 16 goals for the Chicago Fire team.

“I believe this is the right time for me to explore new opportunities in my career“, said Shaqiri. “I want to thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Chicago. I wish the Fire team success in the future”.

Shaqiri has played for several clubs in England, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. He has represented Switzerland in four world championships.
