Former President Donald Trump held a press conference at his New Jersey golf club on Thursday, his second in as many days, as he faces a renewed Democratic campaign ahead of the start of the Democratic National Convention next week.
Mr Trump has criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for not holding any press conferences or giving interviews since President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for a second term and endorsed Ms Harris as the Democratic nominee to replace her.
Vice President Harris has not spoken to reporters often since becoming a candidate, although she has sometimes answered questions from reporters traveling with her on the campaign trail.
In a brief exchange last week, she told reporters she hoped to give interviews within the month.
At a rally in North Carolina on Wednesday, President Trump often strayed from the main topic of the economy. His team had announced an important speech on the matter. Mr Trump promised to lower energy prices and boost welfare, but also frequently went off script with personal attacks on Ms Harris.
He again expressed disappointment that the Democrats nominated the vice president to replace Mr. Biden.
A recent poll by the Associated Press news agency in collaboration with NORC, the Center for Public Affairs Research, concludes that Americans are more likely to trust Mr. Trump than Ms. Harris on issues such as the economy and immigration, which he has put them at the center of his campaign message.
In a statement released before Mr. Trump's rally in North Carolina, Ms. Harris's campaign spokesman, Michael Tyler, accused Mr. Trump of failing to protect the interests of the middle class.
Vice President Harris heads to North Carolina on Friday, where she will talk about her economic policy that envisions reducing “costs for middle-class families,” an official on her team said.
According to polls, Mr Trump has a slight lead in North Carolina, although Ms Harris is close behind him.
