Russian police have detained a US citizen in Moscow for “violence” against law enforcement officers, investigators said Wednesday.
“On the evening of August 12, 2024, a US citizen was taken to a Moscow police station in connection with a violent act he committed,” the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.
“The suspect refused to provide his identity documents, after which he committed violence against law enforcement officers,” they added.
The statement said the man, who was not named, would be charged and an investigation would ask the court to remand him in custody.
The incident comes just two weeks after the release of US journalist Evan Gershkovich, former US Navy SEAL Paul Whelan and 14 others from Russian prisons in the biggest prisoner swap between East and West since the Cold War.
There are still a number of US citizens and Western citizens in Russian prisons on a number of charges.
In Washington, the State Department said it could not comment on details of the case because of privacy rules.
“We are aware of reports of other American citizens being detained in Russia,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.
“We are trying to get as much information as possible, trying to ascertain the consular situation and see if consular access is available,” Patel said. (ns/jm)
