LONDON – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman in central London, police said Monday.

The attack took place in Leicester Square, an area frequented by tourists due to its shops, theaters and cinemas. The square and the surrounding area are visited every week by 2.5 million visitors.

The police announced that the two victims were sent to a medical center. There is still no information on their injuries.

The act comes at a time when the situation in Britain is fragile after the violence of the last few weeks, when crowds of people, shouting anti-immigrant and anti-Islamic slogans, clashed with the police. The unrest was fueled by far-right activists who used social media to spread malicious information about a stabbing that left three girls dead during a dance class to songs by US singer Taylor Swift.

It is not yet clear whether Monday's attack had anything to do with the unrest.

Police remained on alert for further unrest over the weekend, but there were no large-scale clashes. Ministers remain on high security, Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office announced, adding that the government's work on responding to the aftermath of the violence of recent weeks is not over.
